WEEK TEN - B

I started to work on the animation copying and pasting the wheels. I was having a lot of difficulty with the size and keeping the rotation consistent. I turned on snapping by magnetics so I could just spin them once each time. It took me 24 layers to spin the wheels a complete 360 degrees.

I then moved on too trying to figure out the background. I wanted to do something like a blur of passing trees. I found an image of a tree line and chose some of the green colors. I tried finding a water color or blending brush but it wasn’t working as I wanted it to. After searching through Procreates features I found the motion blur. I painted and mixed some greens and then blurred the background. Here is a photo of what I had as the background.

Even though I think the motion blur has the effect I wanted I don’t like the greens and red together and the background now seems distracting.

So here is my final version and the time lapse of my Procreate progress.

Here is the version I gave to my Dad for his birthday :)

WEEK TEN - A

Today we were assigned a new project to create an animated gif using procreate. I’m very excited to create an animation especially through Procreate as I did not know that was a possibility to doom that app. I started by watching the tutorial video posted on D2L for use to use. It was actually very helpful in learning different styles there are possible to do. Here is the link to the video:

After watching the video I wanted to collect more ideas so I made a Pinterest board. I saved many gifs that I found fun and a direction I could go in. Here is the link to my Pinterest board:

Our assignment was open to whatever we would like to draw and I still wasn’t sure of a direction to go in. I thought of maybe doing something with plants or may be Halloween themed, but I then I decided on making something for my Dad since it’s his birthday on Saturday.

So, I began with writing down the requirement and then a list of ideas of things my dad likes. From there I did three sketches of some of the ideas and decided on the Mini Cooper. My thought is to have the wheels spin and then similar, to the cloud background have trees passing by behind it. Below are my paper and pencil sketches.

Next, I moved into Procreate and started out drawing the car. I brought in a photo of the pencil sketch I did and used a photo of my Dad’s car to match the colors.

I had the most trouble with smoothing out the shape and with figuring out the wheels. My next step is to figure out the animation and the background.

FINAL EDITORIAL

Here is my final editorial illustration. I increased the color saturation to really intensify the colors as in the previous progress photo the drawing looked washed out. I also added in some of the texture Professor Mata suggested in the brick with a free stock photo that I masked. I added some bats and eyes in the hedges too to add to the Halloween spookiness.

WEEK NINE - B

After meeting with Professor Mata over Zoom, I decided to completely switch up the layout of the scene. She encouraged me to go scarier and darker as the article is about wanting Halloween frights back. She also encouraged me to add texture as the drawing is very flat right now.

I kept the vampire trick-or-treater but changed the orientation of the front door so I could add a skyline. I also made the colors darker in tones looking for browns, purples, and greens. I still need to finish up the vampire's face and add some textures.

Adobe Max 2020

I signed up and joined the Adobe MAX 2020 Virtual conference. I started by making a schedule, but after watching the opening keynote I learned about some new features Abobe has to offer such as Illustrator for the iPad and Adobe Fresco.

On Tuesday I watched the following presentations and live streams.

I learned more about the features of Illustrator on the iPad, live streams presented on Behance, and how to use Adobe Fresco. I very excited to try Illustrator on the iPad and look into using Fresco. Currently, I have been working with Procreate, but I want to continue learning other platforms.

With Meg Lewis, she worked through a design challenge in Illustrator to layout type while incorporating your personality. She started by looking at hierarchy and listing out some personality traits. She then found typefaces that matched those types to the personalities. She found three typefaces that looked very different and then worked on bringing them together. I enjoyed this presentation as the presenter really worked through her own work and thought process.

WEEK NINE - A

I received two comments from my groupmates about feedback on my final paper sketches.

After reading through their thoughts and getting outside input I decided to go with the vampire as it matches better with the article of wanting to scare trick-or-treaters. I started with the background and worked on Procreate. I did a lot of research on Pinterest for finding cartoon styles and how to add color. I started by doing outlines of the door, trees, and other elements and then made a layer in the background to fill in the color. I wanted to use the color as a way to add further texture to the piece.

Here is what I had finished over the weekend

On Tuesday I continued working on my editorial.

I decided to add a longer cape to my vampire. I haven't finished the face yet, but everything else is coming together well. I received some comments on not having the speech bubble, however, I think the fangs comment really adds to the disappointment of a COVID Halloween. I do want to change the style of the speech bubble though to be a little softer and not as geometric.

Here's a screenshot of some of the examples I have with speech bubbles.

WEEK EIGHT - B

For my concept sketches, I decided to sketch out two of the Halloween ideas: the scary scarecrow and masked vampire.

I added in some masked ghosts and more detail to the scarecrow. From the feedback by one of my groupmates, I tried to create more of a scene for the little vampire. I had a lot of empty space though from the vertical layout so I included a title. I'm still torn between which one I want to choose. I think both of them could be a good idea. Even though I started with the scarecrow, I think the vampire is a little silly and cute and matches better with the trick or treating article.

WEEK EIGHT - A

After uploading my editorial thumbnails, I waited for my groupmates' feedback on my design. Below I have a screenshot of my groupmates' comments. Their suggestions and advice were a little mixed with two in favor of the Halloween scarecrow and one for the anxious scribbles.

While I appreciated their input on which one to do, I was still a little uncertain about how my illustration should look. I scheduled a meeting with Professor Mata and she gave me some feedback gave me a clear direction in.

I told her what my groupmates said and she told me to pick the one I prefer and start from there. I feel that both of the ideas I could work with, but the anxiety scribbles felt like it could become more of a fine art project where the scarecrow would be more of a cartoon. I decided to go with the scarecrow and try a more cartoon/political cartoon style; something I've never really done before.

With that choice, Professor Mata suggested I try to make the scene really gloomy and creepy, and then I can have that notorious blue mask and make him not as scary anymore.

I started by creating a mood board before my sketches to get a general idea of the style, colors, and look of the elements.

WEEK SEVEN - B

Below I have my 10 thumbnail sketches for my editorial. I drew out three for each article and four for the last one. I'm not quite sure yet of the one I want to choose. Some of them are more cartoon style while some could be a more in-depth illustration.

WEEK SEVEN - A

Today we were assigned our next project: to create an editorial piece. We were given a list of three prechosen articles to read and our final piece will be an illustration that is to be presented beside the article.

I began the assignment by reading the three articles and writing down some key points of each one as I read. I wasn't trying to take notes for a summary of the article, but rather capture some lines or points that made me connect to a potential visual. In the three rectangles in my notes are some visuals that stood out to me the most after the reading.

100 HANDS

On Sunday I finished all 100 of my hand drawings. I miscounted towards the very end and had two 91s so I had 101 but just removed one I didn't really like.

Towards the end, they appeared much better as I felt more comfortable with using the pencil and the platform, also I switched out the brush I was using for something clearer. I was tempted to redo the first few as they seem blurry and choppy from the brush, but they were a part of the process from 1 to 100.

WEEK SIX - B

Wednesday

Continuing with the hands I added a few more to the list. My hope was to complete 20 a day to finish on Sunday, but my rough start yesterday put me behind a little so I will work back at them tomorrow and do 25 a day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday
I have some momentum now but I am getting stuck on poses to do. I decided to look up some words and the alphabet in sign language and incorporate them throughout. A quarter of the way there!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday
Almost halfway there! I filled up the entire canvas today so it looks like I will have three pages for the final submission. So far things are processing well, except the style of pen I was using suddenly stopped working... this had happened before only for the specific style nothing else was affected. I turned my iPad off and repaired the pencil but nothing. Luckily I found a pen with a similar style and started to use that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday
I finished so many today! I caught up to my goal with the 8 I missed yesterday, got to my goal of 25 for the day, plus did a few more over the 75 mark! So far I love seeing the finished product of them all in columns and rows and the emotion behind each hand (#24 from the last set is my favorite so far).

FINAL SHORT STORY

Here is my final short story layout! Professor Mata really enjoyed my visual style and was glad I was able to figure out how I want to ill...
