WEEK SEVEN - B

Below I have my 10 thumbnail sketches for my editorial. I drew out three for each article and four for the last one. I'm not quite sure yet of the one I want to choose. Some of them are more cartoon style while some could be a more in-depth illustration.

  1. Hi Delanie,
Out of your ten sketches I really enjoy the Halloween ones. I find the last one with the scarecrow to be the most effective. I believe this because to me it conveys the Covid effects on Halloween the most. Having something that is supposed to or should scare young children be diminished by wearing a mask truly shows the negative effect Covid has. Maybe if you try making the scarecrow look more scary and at least attempting to scare the children would have a bigger impact. I have something similar in my sketches where I have a couple of the classic movie monsters wearing masks with designs of their own face on them. Maybe you can play with that idea for your scarecrow? Overall your concepts are strong and convey the articles nicely

  2. Hey Delanie,
Your overall concepts with your sketches looks very solid and conveys very well with the articles. I would agree with Tim said above, that the Halloween concept are the ones that worth leaning into. The kid with his arms out and the scarecrow are good examples to go for. Try giving either one of the two examples a little emotion just to give it negative effect of Halloween while living in pandemic. For the child, it could use some background to make your ideas less empty. Since it looks like it's actually taken place at home, why not add some furniture to it, pictures on the wall, or maybe add his dad standing in front of his child as both of them are interacting with each other.

  3. Delanie,
I think out of all the thumbnails you have here I'm the most intrigued by the figure surrounded by the scribbles. I'm assuming that it's for the article "Dear Teenagers..." I really like the composition of the scribble or "anxiety" crowding the figure. The second one I really like is the scarecrow with the mask, though I worry that there isn't enough of a connection to Halloween. Maybe add some pumpkins towards the bottom and it could help with that.
